Carmen Reyes
Assistant Teacher, US Kids Child Development Center, Inc.
Resident and Board Member, Jubilee Housing
When Jim came to Jubilee, I was pregnant with my daughter who will turn 20 in March. He calls her his first Jubilee baby because they got their start at the same time. She’s in college, and I know that’s because of Jubilee.
I’m a single mama working full time, but I want to give my time back to Jubilee because they’ve helped all of us. In December, the childcare center where I work was closed so I showed up early to a gathering for members of the community to learn about Jubilee. The host started by saying “We’re so honored to have the CEO here, and it’s a pleasure to introduce Jim Knight.”
But Jim stood up and said, “No, I’m not the most important person here. Let Carmen go first. She’s the important one!” I laughed and asked if they had a timer because I could talk all day, but he always encourages me to tell my story.
Sometimes I’m rushing from work and am late to board meetings. Whenever I apologize or suggest they get someone who can start on time, Jim always says, “You’re not going. No way.” I missed the beginning of our last meeting when everyone was checking in, catching up and chatting, Jim texted me the next day just to see how I’m doing.
Jim truly feels what he does for other people. He has passion and doesn’t just go through the motions. I’m telling you he’s like my big brother, or maybe my little brother who I look up to. I believe he does what he does because he feels it in heart. When you do something you like, you have always have energy. He seems to always have the energy. He always makes time for you.
In celebration of Jim Knight’s 20th year leading Jubilee Housing, we invited several of Jim’s colleagues and friends to share reflections on meaningful moments.
