Tutoring Coordinator (Teen Center/Youth Services)

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Jubilee Youth Services is seeking a tutoring coordinator to ensure our afterschool programs are staffed with volunteer tutors; our programs meet expectations for high dosage tutoring as it relates to frequency of tutoring and number of children receiving ongoing tutoring services from our programs. This will include being able to directly tutor students as needed for various academic subjects but not limited to: English/Reading, Mathematics, Science, and other academic subjects. This position will be initially housed at the Teen Center (grades 7-12) location with expectations to also support programming in the after school programs for students in K-6th grade after school programs, as assigned or needed. We are seeking a tutoring coordinator who has experience managing up to 20 volunteer tutors, coordinating tutoring services, is able to provide tutoring themselves to students as needed, and seeking or maintaining collaboration opportunities with external tutoring partners.
This position is funded for one year from the date hired. After one year of employment Jubilee Housing will determine whether to extend the contract for another period of time.
SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Assist and support participants in different grade-appropriate subject areas, working with students attending in person or virtually
• Design (in consultation with other staff members) an effective approach to tutoring teens and younger students
• Collaborate and Co-manage external tutoring partners, including training volunteers on tutoring best practices and supervising volunteers to maintain high levels of tutoring service
• Meet with After School programming staff to collaborate on academic goals and to determine the strengths of each student enrolled in After school programming
• Develop positive relationships with participants
• Promote independent learning through one-to one, learning in partnership with another learner, or as part of a small group
• Provide personalized learning that is specific to the needs of the individual and/or group tutees
• Facilitate tutor insights into learning, and learning processes
• Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet tutee varying needs, abilities, and interest
• Provide a student perspective on learning and success
• Respect individual differences
• Track and report daily tutoring participation in Apricot database
• Track, measure, and report academic progress for participants
• Successfully lead outreach, recruitment, and retention of tutoring participants
• Responsible for maintaining minimum service high dosage tutoring provision expectations
• Serves as a role model for youth and establishes meaningful relationships that will encourage and motivate the youth
• Follow up with appropriate formal and informal supports for students such as parents, teachers, etc.
• Maintain high standard of confidentiality and professionalism as a representative of Jubilee Housing to participants, their families, internal staff, and external partners.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor Degree or equivalent qualified professional experience
• Teaching or Tutoring experience required and Tutoring managerial experience preferred
• Knowledge of tutoring best practices and an understanding of how children and teens learn required
• At least 1 year of child/youth development, education, social work experience preferred
• Bilingual in Spanish and English (spoken and written) preferred but not required
• Availability to work between 3:00 pm-7:00 pm, Monday-Thursday and 9:00 am-5:00 pm on Fridays
• Must undergo a comprehensive background check, including clearances for the National Sex Offender Registry and the District of Columbia Child Protection Registry, as well as FBI Background Checks.
• Preferred: Two years of experience working with diverse inner-city youth school aged children
• Demonstrable experience working as part of a team
• Strong ability to positively engage with youth
• Strong ability to connect with and train volunteers
• Work schedule: Willingness to work weekdays Monday –Thursday on a modified schedule which is subject to change due to the ongoing Pandemic, during late morning and evening hours between (11am-7pm) and a 9:00 am-5:00 pm on Fridays. Also a willingness to work a summer, 9:00 am -5:00 pm schedule that typically operates for 6 weeks during the month of July through mid-August. When programs are not in session, hours will also be on a 9-5 schedule and there will opportunities for hybrid, in person/virtual workdays when afterschool/summer programs are not in session.
SALARY:
Salary is $50,000 for one contracted year.
